The “free VPS” keeps coming up in searches, but in practice it almost never exists in a durably usable form. What hides behind that promise deserves a clear-eyed look before you commit.

What “free” actually means

Three models hide behind the label:

• The free trial: a few dollars of credit at a big cloud provider, valid for a month or two. Once the window closes, billing starts, often at a high rate.
• The permanent “free tier”: a throttled micro-instance (minimal RAM, shared CPU, capped traffic) at a hyperscaler. A credit card is required at sign-up, and any overage tips into billing.
• The dubious offers: unknown hosts promising a free VPS in exchange for a sign-up. Most of the time: your data resold, no support, and the service vanishing within weeks.

The concrete traps

A free VPS almost always comes with strings attached. A mandatory credit card at sign-up, resources too small to host anything beyond a test page, cutoffs without notice, no backups, and an IP address sometimes already flagged on spam lists. For a real project, the time lost working around these limits costs more than a few euros a month.
